Designing a Hydrogen Community

College students around the world are challenged to design a hydrogen community in the 2010 Hydrogen Education Foundation’s Student Design Contest. The annual contest showcases the talents of students in many disciplines, including engineering, architecture, marketing, and entrepreneurship.

Winning teams are to present their design to at the 2010 National Hydrogen Association Conference in Long Beach in May; grand prize winners do so during a keynote session and runners-up participate in the poster presentations. All winning teams also receive cash prizes and awards.

The 2010 Hydrogen Student Design Contest challenges students to plan and design the basic elements of a hydrogen community in Southern California. Students’ plans must address:

  1. Hydrogen Production—a strategy for supplying hydrogen for the community with at least 33% renewable hydrogen and one hydrogen energy station that co-produces power, heat, and hydrogen.
  2. Early Markets—a market analysis to determine near-term customers for back-up power, portable power and materials handling vehicles. Students will identify at least five businesses or other organizations that could be customers.
  3. Fueling Stations—plan and design a cluster of hydrogen fueling stations for vehicles in the community, including the number of fueling stations, the approximate locations, station type and total cost. Students will design the main components of three fueling stations.

Registration for the contest is free and must be by January 22, 2010. For registration and more information, please visit http://www.hydrogencontest.org

The California Fuel Cell Partnership is proud to be a sponsor of the 2010 Student Design Contest.
